One professional mixologist arrives with everything: the alcohol and mixers, shakers, glasses, fruit, decorations, ice, even the napkins and straws. Over two hours each guest makes three cocktails with as much help as they need. There are games along the way, and it finishes with the group in teams, each trying to mix the best drink. The mixologist can wear their own clothes or the butler outfit of collar, cuffs and apron, so say which when you book.

The price starts at £35 per person, based on at least 10 guests. Fewer than that and you still pay for 10, so six friends get ten people’s drinks.

Housing in the borough splits roughly in two. South of the centre, in Purley, Sanderstead, Coulsdon and Selsdon, it’s mostly semis and detached family houses with a drive and a dining room. Around East Croydon station it’s tall blocks of flats, where you’ll need to warn the concierge or pass on the entry code, and where visitor parking can be scarce.

Many streets near the centre are in controlled parking zones, so check for a visitor bay or permit. The mixologist needs to stop close by to unload. Indoors, a large table is best and a clear run of worktop is fine. If you rent, your landlord has to agree to it.

A class at home can be the whole evening. Carry on afterwards with whatever is in the fridge, bearing in mind that drinks beyond the ones made in the class are yours to supply. If you are going out, South End has a long run of restaurants, and East Croydon has fast trains to London Bridge and Victoria.

Mojitos and Pina Coladas are what’s normally made. Requests go in at least 14 days before, and some carry a supplement: £2.50 per cocktail for Pornstar or Espresso Martinis, £5 for Long Island Iced Tea.
