Hen Party Cocktail Class York
York is small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes, which is why every hen group ends up on the same few streets. Having the first drinks at your own house, with a mixologist in charge, puts off joining the crowd on Micklegate until you’re good and ready.
What happens in the class
For two hours a professional mixologist takes over your dining table. They bring the bar with them, meaning the drink, the mixers, the tools, the glassware, the ice and all the fruit and trimmings, then talk the group through three cocktails apiece, stepping in whenever someone needs a hand. Games keep it moving. At the end you’re put into teams and each team tries to out-mix the others.
You can have the mixologist in ordinary clothes or in butler uniform (an apron with collar and cuffs). Prices begin at £35 per person. Ten is the minimum we charge for, so a group of eight pays the ten-person rate and has two extra people’s cocktails to go round.
Inside the walls, outside the walls
Where you stay decides how easy the logistics are. Within the walls, lets are mostly old townhouses and flats on narrow streets, many of them closed to vehicles during the day, with little or no parking. Just outside, in Bishophill, Bootham, the Groves and South Bank, it’s rows of Victorian terraces with residents’ parking. Villages such as Poppleton and Bishopthorpe have the detached houses and cottages with drives.
For a city-centre address, work out in advance where the nearest legal stopping place is and tell us. You’ll also need a room where the mixologist can change in private, and the owner of the let has to be on board.
Villages and towns we reach
A class in a village works just as well as one in the city. Haxby, Strensall, Poppleton, Bishopthorpe, Copmanthorpe, Dunnington, Escrick, Stamford Bridge and Tadcaster are all places the mixologist will come to.
Harrogate, Helmsley and Scarborough are too. Whatever the address, you’ll find its price on the instant quote.
Race days, drink choices and the walk into town
York Racecourse is on the Knavesmire, about a mile south of the centre, and on race days, above all the Ebor meeting in August, the city is full from lunchtime. A morning class before racing or an evening one afterwards both work.
On other weekends, an early evening finish leaves a short walk to Micklegate, Swinegate or Fossgate. If you’d like to pick the menu, ask no later than 14 days before. The default drinks are Mojitos and Pina Coladas; a Pornstar or Espresso Martini is £2.50 more per cocktail, while Long Island Iced Tea is £5 more.
There’s more on all of this on the cocktail masterclass page.

York Cocktail Class: Quick Answers
We’re coming for the Ebor meeting in August. Do we have to pay to hold a date?
No. Reserving is free and needs no payment that day, so there’s nothing to lose by doing it early.
Could we use a private room above a pub on Micklegate instead of our house?
Yes. A private room in a bar is fine provided the owner agrees and the room is out of public view.
Our cottage near the Minster only sleeps eight. Do we pay for eight?
You pay for ten, which is the minimum, and get ten people’s cocktails to share between the eight of you.
