Hen Party Life Drawing Cambridge

Cambridge is flat, compact and largely made up of small terraced houses, which shapes a hen party here more than the colleges do. Most groups spend the day on the Cam or along the Backs and want something at the house before going out. A life drawing class does that without anyone needing a taxi.

How the class runs

It lasts 90 minutes, with a two-hour option for £50 more, and it’s led by one male model, with no tutor, so it suits beginners as much as anyone who has drawn before. He spends the first 45 minutes posing nude, changing position three or four times. If the group would prefer him partly clothed, ask when you book.

The second 45 minutes are butler service, when he will:

  • change into his butler attire
  • serve your drinks
  • host party games
  • choose his favourite drawing
  • pose for photos with the group

Paper (A4), pencils, rubbers and sharpeners are provided for up to 20 people. Prices start from £15 per person for a group of up to 20, with extra materials at £5 a head beyond that.

Making a small Cambridge house work

Houses let to groups here are often small Victorian terraces in Romsey, Petersfield or elsewhere off Mill Road, with a front room and a back room in place of one large space. Use whichever is bigger, move the sofa against the wall and bring in dining chairs so people sit round the model in a horseshoe. Daylight helps, but the room mustn’t be overlooked while he’s undressed, and front rooms on these streets open almost straight onto the pavement, so shut the blinds. Nothing to lean on comes with the materials. Hardback books and trays both work.

He travels to addresses across the city and the wider region. That includes Cherry Hinton, Trumpington, Grantchester, Girton, Histon, Great Shelford, Waterbeach, Sawston and Cambourne, along with Bury St Edmunds, Peterborough and Bedford. Themes, extra time and the evening

With the class held at the house, the group can head straight out afterwards, to Mill Road or into the centre. Themes are welcome. Tell us if it’s a 1920s party, say, and leave out any props you’d like him to wear. If 45 minutes of drawing sounds short, £50 extends the session by half an hour, so each half lasts an hour. The full run-down is on our hen party life drawing page.

Cambridge Life Drawing: Quick Answers

Is May Week a difficult time to book?

May Week, confusingly, is in June, and the city is busy with college balls. Reserving a date costs nothing and no payment is taken when you reserve, so hold yours as soon as the weekend is fixed.

Could we do the drawing outdoors, on Jesus Green or in the garden?

Not on Jesus Green or any other public space. The venue must be private and out of public view, so a garden only works if nobody can see into it.

Our terrace has two small rooms and fourteen guests. Which room do we use?

Everyone has to be in the same room as the model, so pick the larger one and clear as much furniture as you can. The other room then gives him somewhere to change.
